Applin is a Generation 8 Grass and Dragon type based on moth or beetle larvae that burrow into apples, such as the geometer moth or codling moth, and possibly on the amphisbaenia mole lizard. It uses body fluid to keep its apple home from rotting and needs only 600,000 experience points to reach level 100, the lowest for any Dragon type alongside Altaria. It can evolve into Flapple, Appletun, or Dipplin depending on which item is used.
Applin is the only Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII with a branched evolution, and the first since Tyrogue to branch into more than two possible species. Because Dipplin can go on to Hydrapple, Applin and Mime Jr. are the only Pokémon whose branches have different numbers of stages.
Applin debuted as a pair of Commons in Rebel Clash illustrated by Mizue and Kagemaru Himeno, and Shining Fates added a Shiny Vault Shiny rare by otumami. Twilight Masquerade later gave it an illustration rare alongside two additional Common printings.
