Gym Challenge sits in the WOTC era of the English-language Pokémon TCG as the closing expansion of the Gym series, released October 16, 2000 under set code G2. It runs 132 cards, the same size as Gym Heroes, which came before it. The set builds on gym leaders and the Team Rocket cast, with Blaine, Giovanni, Giovanni's Meowth, Koga and Koga's Koffing each printed in more than one version. Its Pokémon lean on Grass, Colorless, Psychic and Water types, and its headline cards are Blaine's Charizard, Rocket's Mewtwo and Misty's Gyarados.
Gym Challenge has a plain pull ladder: 49 commons, 42 uncommons and 21 rares, topped by 20 holo rares that form the chase tier. There are no secret cards, so the whole set stays within the printed 132. Blaine's Charizard is the most valuable card, followed by Rocket's Mewtwo, Misty's Gyarados and Blaine's Arcanine, all holo rares. Ken Sugimori illustrated Blaine's Charizard, and he is credited on 100 cards across the set. The top five cards hold 39 percent of the set's total card value, so value is spread across the holo rares more than concentrated in one or two names.
As of October 2026, Gym Challenge ranks 5th by total card value among the 16 comparable WOTC sets and 18th across the whole game, at about 1.5 times the era median. Its top card, Blaine's Charizard, ranks 8th in the era, and its trading activity ranks 10th. At 132 printed cards it is larger than the era median of 108. It followed Gym Heroes, which holds less total value, and came before Neo Genesis, which also holds less. Seventy-two of its cards first appeared in the Japanese set Challenge from the Darkness, released June 25, 1998.

The full run is 132 printings, and all 132 are priced. With the top five cards holding 39 percent of total card value, the cost of a complete Gym Challenge set rests on the holo rares, while the commons, uncommons and rares are the bulk of the checklist. The sealed line lists 8 products, mainly decks, booster boxes and booster packs, which gives collectors more than one way to approach the card list and the chase cards.
