Porygon2 evolves from Porygon when traded while holding an Upgrade, and evolves into Porygon-Z when traded while holding a Dubious Disc. Its artificial intelligence lets it pick up new behaviors unprompted, and it talks in a language that only other Porygon2 understand. Porygon cannot evolve into Porygon2 in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen until the player obtains the National Pokédex, and Porygon2 is not present at all in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
Porygon2 is the only Pokémon with a numeral in its name, and in the Generation II games it is impossible to return a nicknamed Porygon2 to its species name because numbers are unavailable for nicknames. Porygon2 is the only non-fully evolved Pokémon that evolves both into and from another Pokémon by trading, and along with Chansey and Dipplin it is one of only a few non-fully evolved Pokémon that evolve using an item. It is also the only non-fully evolved Pokémon used in Battle Subway Super Trains, Battle Maison Super Course challenges, and the Battle Tree, making it the only Pokémon in those facilities that can hold an Eviolite.
Porygon2's first card was a Neo Revelation Rare illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi in 2001, followed by a Neo Destiny Dark Porygon2 and an Aquapolis Rare. Unseen Forces and Delta Species each added a Rare, and the line continued through Great Encounters, an HGSS Black Star Promo, and Triumphant. Plasma Blast, Ancient Origins, Burning Shadows, and Unbroken Bonds added further Uncommons, Chilling Reign and Lost Origin continued the run, and Paradox Rift printed a Common before Destined Rivals introduced a Team Rocket's Porygon2 Common illustrated by Takeshi Nakamura.
