Magmar was a single-stage Fire type in Red and Blue. Gold and Silver gave it the baby pre-evolution Magby, which evolves into Magmar at level 30, and Diamond and Pearl added Magmortar, reached only by trading Magmar while it holds a Magmarizer. Its standard ability, Flame Body, can burn a Pokémon that touches it; Vital Spirit, which prevents sleep, is its hidden ability.
Despite its link to Blaine, the Cinnabar Gym Leader does not use Magmar in Red, Blue or Yellow. It joins his team in Gold, Silver and Crystal, where he battles from the Seafoam Islands with Magcargo, Magmar and Rapidash.
In the anime Magmar is Blaine's ace, caught in the Cinnabar Island volcano and the last Pokémon he sends out against Ash. In Riddle Me This it overpowered Ash's Pikachu until Ash forfeited, and in Volcanic Panic Ash's Charizard beat it in a rematch on the volcano's summit to win the Volcano Badge.
Magmar's first English card is Base Set #36 from January 1999, an uncommon illustrated by Ken Sugimori. Fossil followed that year with a Mitsuhiro Arita Magmar, and through the Wizards of the Coast era its set printings stayed uncommon: Base Set 2, Blaine's Magmar in Gym Heroes, Neo Genesis and Expedition all print it at that rarity.
Ruby & Sapphire (2003) introduced Magmar ex, illustrated by Hikaru Koike, and Legend Maker (2006) printed Magmar as a Rare. Later eras treat it as a common or uncommon, including a Journey Together common by Naoyo Kimura, who had also drawn the Neo Genesis Magmar.
