Electabuzz evolves from Elekid at level 30 and evolves into Electivire when traded while holding an Electirizer, an item introduced with Electivire in Generation IV. It stands 1.1 meters tall and weighs 30 kilograms. Its regular ability, Static, can paralyze an attacker that makes contact, and its hidden ability, Vital Spirit, prevents it from falling asleep.
In Generation I, Electabuzz had no evolutionary relatives at all. Generation II added Elekid as its baby pre-evolution, and Generation IV added Electivire, turning a standalone Kanto Pokémon into the middle of a three-stage line.
In the anime, Electabuzz is also the name and mascot of a baseball team. Casey, a rookie Trainer Ash meets several times during his Johto travels, is devoted to it: she sings the team's anthem, favors yellow and black striped Pokémon (Ash gives her the Beedrill he won in the Bug-Catching Contest for that reason), and works hard to catch an Elekid because it is the pre-evolution of her team's namesake.
Electabuzz's first card is Base Set #20 from January 1999, a Rare illustrated by Ken Sugimori, whose art also carried over to Base Set 2. Gym Heroes tied it to Vermilion City's Gym Leader as Lt. Surge's Electabuzz, with a Holo Rare (#6) and a separate Rare (#27). Neo Genesis and Expedition Base Set kept it in print at Uncommon, a 2002 Best of Game promo followed, and Ruby & Sapphire (2003) introduced Electabuzz ex, illustrated by Hikaru Koike.
Later sets have mostly printed Electabuzz at Common and Uncommon, from Platinum's Ken Sugimori Rare in 2009 through the XY and Scarlet & Violet years, including a Destined Rivals Common by Amelicart in 2025.
Electabuzz is a set-builder's Pokémon more than a chase card. Its anchors are Ken Sugimori's Base Set art, the Lt. Surge's Electabuzz holo and the Ruby & Sapphire ex, and it fits naturally into runs that follow the full Elekid, Electabuzz and Electivire line.
