Magmortar evolves from Magmar when traded while holding a Magmarizer and is the final form of Magby. When it fires, its claws retract so each arm becomes a cannon that launches fireballs hot enough to melt iron, though it holds back from this when hunting. Its line mirrors Electivire's: the baby stage evolves at level 30, the final stage needs a trade holding an item ending in izer, and both lines share a gender ratio and the Hidden Ability Vital Spirit.
Magmortar, along with Electivire, Gliscor, and Tangrowth, were the only Generation IV Pokémon that explicitly required a Generation III game to be available until Pokémon Platinum released, with both the Magmarizer and Magby only obtainable through dual-slot mode with Pokémon LeafGreen. Magmortar was designed by Hironobu Yoshida, and it is one of four Pokémon capable of having every non-event Ribbon, alongside Magmar, Magneton, and Magnezone.
Magmortar's first set cards came in 2007's Mysterious Treasures: a Rare Holo by Hiroaki Ito and a Rare Holo LV.X by Shizurow. Secret Wonders added a Rare and Supreme Victors a Holo Rare, and the line continued through Unleashed, Triumphant, Call of Legends, and Dragons Exalted. Furious Fists, Ultra Prism, and Unified Minds continued the run, Rebel Clash and Brilliant Stars added Rares, Crown Zenith's Galarian Gallery subset gave it a Rare illustrated by Saya Tsuruta, and Paldean Fates and Journey Together added further Scarlet & Violet era printings.
