Hitmontop is a male-only, humanoid fighting-type Pokémon with a spherical body and a horn atop its head that continuously grows, evolving from Tyrogue at level 20 when its Attack and Defense stats are equal. It fights with dance-like kicks and moves more quickly by spinning on its head spike, its idle animation from Generation 6 onward depicting a ginga, a basic capoeira technique. It can learn more priority moves than any other Pokémon, fourteen increased and two decreased, and it is tied with Hitmonchan for the most increased-priority moves learned by leveling up, at eight.
None of Hitmontop's names in any language derive from a real person, unlike Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan.
Hitmontop looks based on a spinning top and a capoeira fighter, and needing equal Attack and Defense to evolve mirrors how a top must stay balanced to keep spinning. Its limbs and tail may also recall a circus strongman's barbells.
Hitmontop appeared in Two Hits and a Miss under the ownership of Chigusa, who had him help teach her students to make Fighting-type attacks more graceful. Butch's Hitmontop appeared in The Mystery is History and reappeared across the main series and Pokémon Chronicles, while Bea's Hitmontop appeared in a fantasy in Solitary and Menacing! before physically appearing in Octo-Gridlock at the Gym!, where it lost to Ash's Pikachu.
Hitmontop's first cards were two 2001 Neo Discovery Rares illustrated by Sumiyoshi Kizuki. HeartGold SoulSilver and Call of Legends both carried Holo Rare printings, illustrated by Ken Sugimori and Shigenori Negishi respectively, and the Mega Evolution era's Ascended Heroes added both a Common and an Illustration Rare, illustrated by Kouki Saitou and osare.

Hitmontop is the Handstand Pokémon, a pure fighting type and one of Tyrogue's three evolutions at level 20, produced when Tyrogue's Attack and Defense stats are equal. It fights by spinning on the horn atop its head, and in the anime Chigusa's Hitmontop helped her teach students more graceful Fighting-type attacks.
