Hitmonchan was in the original Pokémon Red and Green, but its pre-evolution came later: Tyrogue arrived in Gold and Silver as a baby Pokémon with three possible evolutions at level 20. The result depends on Tyrogue's stats at that moment. If Attack is higher it becomes Hitmonlee, if Defense is higher it becomes Hitmonchan, and if the two are equal it becomes Hitmontop.
Its standard abilities are Keen Eye, which stops its accuracy from being lowered, and Iron Fist, which powers up punching moves. Its hidden ability, Inner Focus, keeps it from flinching. It stands 1.4 meters tall and weighs 50.2 kilograms.
Hitmonchan's first English card is Base Set #7 (January 1999), one of the set's holo rares, illustrated by Ken Sugimori. That art returned in Base Set 2 and again in Best of Game, the BattleZone tournament promo set, whose print carries an error: 60 HP instead of 70. Sugimori also drew Rocket's Hitmonchan, a holo rare from Gym Heroes (2000), and he is the artist behind more Hitmonchan cards than anyone else, later including Legends Awakened, Platinum and Evolutions.
Neo Destiny and Aquapolis added Common versions with new art from Shin-ichi Yoshida and Tomokazu Komiya before the WOTC era closed.
The EX era gave Hitmonchan both of its ex cards: Hitmonchan ex in Ruby & Sapphire (2003) and Rocket's Hitmonchan ex in Team Rocket Returns (2004), the latter drawn by Mitsuhiro Arita. Since then it has appeared as a Common, Uncommon or Rare in sets from Unseen Forces and Undaunted to Furious Fists, Generations, Team Up, Sword & Shield and Evolving Skies, along with an HGSS Black Star Promo. Scarlet & Violet's 151 (2023) printed it as an Uncommon illustrated by DOM.
