Only female Combee can evolve into Vespiquen. It is tied with Togetic for the lowest base Speed among Flying types, yet is the fastest among all Pokémon that are slowest of their own type. It can create Max Honey when Dynamaxed even though it cannot be caught with Honey itself, and prior to Generation VIII it carried three signature moves, Attack Order, Defend Order and Heal Order, with Heal Order later removed from its movepool.
Its design mixes a queen bee with a queen wasp and borrows from beehives and paper wasp nests, with the red gem on its forehead reading as a royal jewel.
In the anime, Vespiquen first appeared in An Angry Combeenation!, reigning over a large Combee colony. Aaron used one alongside a Drapion during his power demonstration in A Trainer and Child Reunion!, where it was later targeted by Team Rocket.
Vespiquen debuted as a 2007 Diamond & Pearl Rare illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, followed by Stormfront and Rising Rivals Rares from Kent Kanetsuna and Kouki Saitou. Ancient Origins added an Uncommon and a Rare from kawayoo and Ayaka Yoshida, and after a Paldea Evolved Uncommon by Megumi Higuchi, Obsidian Flames brought two Vespiquen ex cards from 5ban Graphics, a Double Rare and an Ultra Rare.
