Ursaring

Ursaring in the games

Ursaring is a bipedal, ursine Pokémon covered in brown fur with a yellow, new-moon-shaped mark on its chest. It lives in mountainous forests, sleeping in treetops and gathering food, including snapping trees for fallen Berries. It evolves from Teddiursa at level 30, and in Hisui it can further evolve into Ursaluna. A female Ursaring has longer, more structured fur on its shoulders than a male, with rectangular extensions resembling epaulettes.

Ursaring appears to be based on bears such as the brown bear and Asian black bear, the latter known in Japanese as tsukinowaguma, or ring-of-the-moon bear, and that bear-and-moon link may also nod to the Ursa Major constellation.

Ursaring in the anime

Paul owns an Ursaring, caught in Different Strokes for Different Blokes. Ursaring was introduced in Forest Grumps, where a multitude of them pursued Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket through their territory during mating season. In UnBEARable, a manipulative Teddiursa evolved into an Ursaring, losing its cute looks but gaining the ability to hunt for food on its own rather than steal it from Trainers. In Danger, Sweet as Honey!, a wild Ursaring living on Honey Island attacked Ash and his friends with Hyper Beam, and in Butterfree and Me!, another Ursaring on Wayfarer Island was scared off by Pikachu's Thunderbolt.
