Ursaluna's evolution is believed to have been triggered by Ursaring being exposed to the swampy terrain of Hisui during a full moon, and its resilient physique lets it travel through the swamps while manipulating peat to its advantage. Ursaluna are known to be good at searching for items and missing persons using their keen sense of smell, and along with Wyrdeer and Kleavor they are among the first cross-generational evolutions from an original form rather than a regional form since Sylveon.
A unique individual known as Bloodmoon Ursaluna has a distinctive red moon mark on its forehead, and its altered appearance cannot be attributed to evolution or a form change. It is taller, bulkier, and lighter in color than a regular Ursaluna, and is the only Pokémon prevented from appearing as Shiny in the Pokédex, even when forced through cheating.
