Trevenant is a Generation VI ghost/grass type resembling a slender tree, with a single red eye visible through a hole near the top and a shadowy black body showing through gaps in the wood. It uses its roots as a nervous system to control other trees, trapping and cursing people who harm its forest while remaining kind to the Pokémon that live within it. Trevenant evolves from Phantump through trading, and it is the only Pokémon that evolves via trading, including with held items, that can also be caught directly in the wild in the same generation it was introduced. James Turner designed it and Phantump.
Trevenant made its animated appearance in Forging Forest Friendships!, kidnapping Ash not out of malice but to get help rescuing its trapped friends Bonsly and Sudowoodo from Team Rocket. A Totem Trevenant nicknamed Elder appeared in A Timeless Encounter!, rewarding Ash with a Firium Z after he and a young Professor Kukui freed a flock of Cutiefly stuck in its leaves, though Elder was later revealed to have passed away by the time Ash returned to the present, and a Trevenant noticed a squabble between Meowth, Chespin, and a Torchic over a Pecha Berry in Pikachu and the Pokémon Music Squad.
