Phantump is said to be a tree stump inhabited by the spirit of a child who died after getting lost in a forest, and people have wandered off following its childlike cries. Brewing the leaves on its stump can create a curative liquid, and it evolves into Trevenant only through trading. Phantump and Trevenant are the only known Pokémon able to learn the move Forest's Curse, and no other Pokémon shares their Egg Group combination.
Multiple Phantump, including a Shiny one, made their animated debut in Making Friends and Influencing Villains!, where Ash and his friends helped the Shiny Phantump reach its mountaintop home and make friends along the way. A Phantump also appeared in A Haunted House for Everyone!, playing with students at the Pokémon School, and another was caught by Goh in A Festival Reunion!.
Phantump's first card, a 2014 XY Common by 5ban Graphics, was followed by further Commons in BREAKpoint, Guardians Rising, and Cosmic Eclipse. Rebel Clash, Fusion Strike, and Lost Origin continued the Common run, and Obsidian Flames and Twilight Masquerade kept the line going into the Scarlet and Violet era, with the Mega Evolution era's Chaos Rising adding a 2026 Common by Taiga Kasai.
