Spinarak is a night-active forest Pokémon whose webs are sturdy enough for fishermen to use as nets. It can sit for days waiting for something to get caught, reads what it has trapped from the web's vibrations, and holds still until dark once prey is snared; Cutiefly is its favorite catch. It evolves into Ariados at level 22, and the two black dots and line on its abdomen form a face-like pattern that can change expression.
Bulbapedia notes Spinarak can be seen as a parallel to Ledyba: both are Generation II Bug types, but Spinarak is nocturnal while Ledyba is active in the morning, and their version exclusivity and relative rarity across games are reversed from one another. In Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, and White, both can only be obtained by breeding their evolved forms.
Spinarak debuted in the episode Spinarak Attack, where an Officer Jenny used one to honor a Spinarak that had foiled a notorious cat burglar known as the Black Arachnid. Gym Leader Bugsy used one against Ash's Cyndaquil and Chikorita in Gettin' The Bugs Out, and a Team Skull Grunt later fielded one that was defeated by Ilima's Eevee in Turning Heads and Training Hard!. A Spinarak living aboard the Abandoned Ship also once tied up Torchic, Max, and Meowth in its silk.
Spinarak debuted in Neo Genesis illustrated by Ken Sugimori, and has remained a Common through most of its printings since. Recent sets have kept it in circulation, including Pokémon GO by Yuka Morii and Shining Fates by sowsow, with a Perfect Order printing by Katsunori Sato continuing the line into the Mega Evolution era.
