Mudkip is one of the three first partner Pokémon Professor Birch offers in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, alongside Treecko and Torchic. It is a pure Water type that evolves into Marshtomp at level 16, picking up the Ground type in the process, and Marshtomp becomes Swampert at level 36. Torrent powers up its Water-type moves when its HP runs low, and its hidden ability, Damp, stops any Pokémon on the field from using self-destructing moves such as Explosion.
Brock caught a Mudkip in A Mudkip Mission on Dewford Island, where it acted as a guardian to the young Mudkip that Old Man Swamp raised for new Trainers. It stayed a Mudkip for 123 episodes, longer than any other Pokémon caught and evolved during the Ruby and Sapphire series, before evolving into Marshtomp during a practice battle with Ash's Grovyle in A Chip Off the Old Brock.
Mudkip's first English cards came in Ruby & Sapphire (2003), printed twice as Commons by Mitsuhiro Arita and Ken Sugimori. The EX era accounts for 12 of the 22 printings in our catalog, including three Nintendo Black Star Promos (two by Atsuko Nishida, one by Kagemaru Himeno), a POP Series 4 card by Masakazu Fukuda and a Poké Card Creator Pack card by Rowan Laidlaw.
The standout is Mudkip ☆ from Team Rocket Returns (2004), a Gold Star card illustrated by Masakazu Fukuda and printed alongside Gold Star versions of Treecko and Torchic. Outside that card, Mudkip has stayed a Common in main sets and a regular promo subject: Aya Kusube drew four of its cards, including an XY Black Star Promo and McDonald's Collection cards in 2015 and 2021, and it returned as an MEP Black Star Promo illustrated by Saboteri in the Mega Evolution era.

Mudkip is the Mud Fish Pokémon, the Water starter of Hoenn that evolves into Marshtomp at level 16 and Swampert at level 36. On cards it is mostly a Common and a frequent promo subject, with a Gold Star Mudkip from Team Rocket Returns as the printing that stands above the rest.
