Kakuna has been part of the series since Pokémon Red and Green. It evolves from Weedle at level 7 and into Beedrill at level 10, the same quick pattern as Caterpie's line, where Metapod also sits between levels 7 and 10. Its only ability is Shed Skin, which gives it a chance to cure its own status condition at the end of each turn, and it has no hidden ability. It stands 0.6 meters tall and weighs 10 kilograms.
Kakuna's first English card is Base Set #33 (January 1999), an Uncommon illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi. That art came back in Base Set 2 (2000) and Legendary Collection (2002), and Kinebuchi drew it again for Evolutions (2016), the XY era set that revisited Base Set, which makes him the artist with the most Kakuna credits.
Gym Challenge (2000) added Koga's Kakuna, drawn by Ken Sugimori, as part of the Gym Leader cards tied to Koga's Poison-type gym. Neo Discovery and Skyridge gave it new art before the WOTC era closed, and six of its 22 printings come from that first era, more than from any later one.
Kakuna has appeared in every era of the card game, from WOTC to Mega Evolution, in sets such as FireRed & LeafGreen, Great Encounters, Unleashed, Plasma Freeze, XY, Team Up, Vivid Voltage, Chilling Reign, Scarlet & Violet's 151 and Chaos Rising (2026). The rarity never changes: through Chaos Rising, Kakuna has not been printed as a holo rare, a Pokémon ex or GX, or an illustration rare, so every one of its cards is a Common or an Uncommon.

The leaders among Kakuna cards come from the WOTC years, with the Skyridge Kakuna from 2003 holding first place in the ranking of the most valuable Kakuna cards. All 22 Kakuna cards carry a market value, spanning releases from 1999 to 2026, and the ten leading cards hold 90 percent of the total value. Six of those ten are WOTC-era prints, while the newest era is represented by a Mega Evolution card from Chaos Rising in 2026.
The Skyridge Kakuna from 2003 is a Common and leads Kakuna card value by 4 times over the next card, Koga's Kakuna from Gym Challenge in 2000, an Uncommon. Third is the Delta Species Kakuna from 2005, followed by the Legendary Collection Kakuna from 2002 and the Base Set Kakuna from 1999, all Uncommons. The Skyridge Common stands well apart from the rest of the Kakuna cards at the top.
Of the twenty-five leading Kakuna cards, six come from the WOTC era, three each from XY and Sword & Shield, and two each from EX, Diamond & Pearl and Sun & Moon. In the top ten, six cards are vintage and four are modern, where vintage means the WOTC era and modern is every later era. Widen to the top twenty-five and sixteen are modern against six vintage. The newest era's leader is the Chaos Rising Kakuna from 2026, which sits 18th overall.
Kakuna card value rests on printed rarities of the plainest kind. Among the ten most valuable Kakuna cards, nine are printed as Uncommon and one as Common, with the Common being the Skyridge Kakuna from 2003 at the top. Widen the count to the leading twenty-five Kakuna cards and sixteen are Uncommon while six are Common. Every leader in these groups carries one of those two printed rarities.
Ranked by the value of its single leading card, Kakuna places 683rd of 1020 species with priced cards, and by the combined value of its ten leaders it places 577th of 753. Within the evolution line, Beedrill ranks 140th of 1020 by top card and Weedle ranks 357th. Kakuna cards sit below both line members, so the market is built on a few older Uncommons and one Common.
