Growlithe is a Fire type that evolves into Arcanine when exposed to a Fire Stone. Its standard abilities are Intimidate, which lowers the opponent's Attack when it enters battle, and Flash Fire, which absorbs Fire-type moves to power up its own; its hidden ability is Justified. It stands 0.7 meters tall and weighs 19.0 kilograms.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus introduced Hisuian Growlithe, a Fire and Rock regional form that evolves into Hisuian Arcanine. In Scarlet and Violet's The Teal Mask, Perrin owns one of the few Hisuian Growlithe known to be alive in the present day, and the player later receives its little brother.
Growlithe was the anime's standard police dog: Officer Jenny used them frequently before the Black & White series. Team Rocket's James also had a pet Growlithe, Growlie, first seen in "Holy Matrimony!" James left it behind when he ran away from home, and it has stayed loyal to him anyway.
Growlithe's first English card is Base Set #28 (1999), an Uncommon illustrated by Ken Sugimori, who drew several more of its WOTC cards. Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge added three Blaine's Growlithe cards, tying it to the Fire-type Gym Leader of Cinnabar Island, and Skyridge (2003), the last set Wizards of the Coast released, closed out its WOTC run.
Legendary Treasures (2013) included it in the Radiant Collection subset, and Twilight Masquerade (2024) gave Hisuian Growlithe an illustration rare by GIDORA.
Growlithe connects two very different chapters: Blaine's Gym cards from the WOTC era and the Hisuian form from Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Between them it has cards in every era from WOTC to Scarlet & Violet, so a Growlithe run can be built era by era.
