Arcanine is a pure Fire type from Pokémon Red and Blue that evolves from Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone. Its Pokédex category is the Legendary Pokémon, a nod to entries that describe it as a creature of Chinese and Eastern legend, but the games do not class it as one of their Legendary Pokémon. It stands 1.9 meters tall and weighs 155.0 kilograms. Pokémon Legends: Arceus added Hisuian Arcanine, a Fire and Rock type.
Its standard abilities are Intimidate, which lowers opponents' Attack when it enters battle, and Flash Fire, which powers up its Fire-type moves after it is hit by one; its hidden ability, Justified, raises its Attack when a Dark-type move hits it.
Arcanine's first card is Base Set #23 (1999), an Uncommon illustrated by Ken Sugimori. Gym Challenge (2000) printed Blaine's Arcanine as a holo rare for the Cinnabar Island Gym Leader, and Neo Destiny (2002) printed Light Arcanine, one of the Light Pokémon that set introduced as gentler counterparts to Dark Pokémon. Aquapolis and Skyridge each printed an Arcanine as both a regular rare and a holo in 2003.
The EX era added Arcanine ex in Legend Maker (2006), Rising Rivals (2009) a holo Arcanine, and the XY era an Arcanine BREAK promo. Silver Tempest (2022) printed Hisuian Arcanine V, and the Scarlet & Violet base set (2023) printed Arcanine ex as a Tera Pokémon.
Ken Sugimori holds the most Arcanine credits in our catalog (8), ahead of 5ban Graphics (5), and the Wizards of the Coast era accounts for 10 of its 43 printings, more than any later era.
Arcanine's best-known cards sit in the Wizards era: the Base Set Uncommon, Blaine's Arcanine and Light Arcanine. Later eras added a handful of special printings, Arcanine ex in both the EX and Scarlet & Violet eras, the BREAK promo and Hisuian Arcanine V, while Rares and Uncommons still make up 27 of its 43 cards.

The most valuable Arcanine card is the Holo Rare from Skyridge, printed in 2003, and it sits about equal with the Aquapolis Holo Rare from the same year. All 43 Arcanine cards carry a market value, and the ten leading cards hold 93 percent of the total, so a small group of prints sets Arcanine card value. The priced cards run from 1999 to 2025, and the most valuable Arcanine cards come mostly from the early years of the game.
The Skyridge Holo Rare from 2003 leads Arcanine card value, about equal to the Aquapolis Holo Rare from 2003 in second. Third is Arcanine ex from Legend Maker, a 2006 Holo Rare, and fourth is Light Arcanine from Neo Destiny in 2002, also a Holo Rare. Fifth is the Aquapolis Rare from 2003, a card without the holo foil of the leaders. A holo carries a shiny, foil-treated artwork window, while a plain Rare does not.
Of the twenty-five leading Arcanine cards, 9 come from the WOTC era, 4 from Diamond & Pearl, and 3 each from EX and Sword & Shield. The newest era is Scarlet & Violet, where Arcanine ex from 2023 is the leader and sits 15th overall. Vintage means the WOTC era, and it holds 7 of the top ten against 3 modern cards. Across the top twenty-five the split flips, with 16 modern cards and 9 vintage.
Holo Rare is the main rarity among the ten most valuable Arcanine cards, with 6 of them, followed by 2 Rares, 1 Common and 1 Promo. Widening to the leading twenty-five, 9 are Holo Rares, 6 are Rares, 3 are Uncommons, 2 are Promos, 2 are Ultra Rares and 1 is a Common. Arcanine cards in the upper ranks are mostly Holo Rare and Rare prints, with Promo and Common cards appearing among the top ten as well.
Among the 1020 species with priced cards, Arcanine ranks 69th by the value of its single leading card. By the combined value of its ten leaders it ranks 47th of 753. Growlithe, the only other member of the evolution line, ranks 310th of 1020 by its top card, well behind Arcanine. Arcanine card value is therefore concentrated in its own prints rather than spread across the evolution line, and within Arcanine a few early holos carry most of it.
