Ferroseed prefers mossy caves, sticking its spikes into walls to absorb minerals; when threatened it fires a volley of spikes and rolls away, though its aim takes practice. No other Pokémon shares its Egg Group combination with Ferrothorn, and both are the only Steel types in the Grass Egg Group, with Ferroseed holding the lowest base Speed among Steel types and the lowest base Special Attack among Grass types.
Ferroseed debuted in Crisis at Ferroseed Research!, where Professor Malveaux's experiments feeding Ferroseed electric stones from Chargestone Cave went out of control and spread moss through the Ferroseed Research Institute.
Ferroseed's first cards were 2011 Emerging Powers Commons illustrated by Midori Harada and MAHOU, followed by a Next Destinies Common from match. Team Up, Sword & Shield and Vivid Voltage kept it Common, and White Flare and the Mega Evolution era's Chaos Rising added further printings, the former paired with an Illustration Rare by Nurikabe.
