Dustox evolves from Cascoon, itself evolved from Wurmple, on the opposite branch from Silcoon and Beautifly. It is active at night and attracted to light, so swarms gather in lit cities and strip the leaves from trees along the roads; when threatened it scatters poisonous scales from its wings. Dustox shares its category, the Poison Moth Pokémon, with Venomoth.
Jessie's Cascoon evolved into a Dustox in Seeing is Believing, the species' debut, and it went on to earn her first Ribbon in Team Shocker! after defeating Kenny's Prinplup. In Crossing Paths, Austin's Shiny Dustox and Jessie's Dustox were released together to take part in the Dustox Crossing, a mass gathering and pairing event near Mt. Coronet.
Dustox debuted in Ruby and Sapphire as a Holo Rare illustrated by Midori Harada, followed by Legend Maker's Dustox ex. Diamond and Pearl and Platinum continued its run, then Dragons Exalted in Black and White and Roaring Skies, which added both an Uncommon and a Rare, in XY. Lost Thunder followed in Sun and Moon and Lost Origin in Sword and Shield, before Ascended Heroes gave it an Uncommon and an Illustration rare in the Mega Evolution era.
