Croconaw evolves from Totodile at level 18 and evolves into Feraligatr at level 30, giving it the shortest level gap between evolutions of any first partner Pokémon at 12 levels. Its backward-slanting teeth hook into whatever it bites, and its design has a prehistoric streak: the head spikes and chest pattern suggest a caveman's wild hair and animal-skin clothing.
Croconaw is modeled on a crocodilian, and Pokémon Sleep shows it and its relatives sleeping with one eye open like real crocodiles. Its name likely blends crocodile with gnaw, maw, or jaw. Because of the filter that blocks offensive nicknames, an English-language Croconaw could not be traded on the GTS in Pokémon Black and White unless it had a nickname.
Croconaw's first cards were a pair of Neo Genesis Uncommons illustrated by Ken Sugimori in 2000, followed by a Neo Destiny Dark Croconaw and an Expedition Base Set printing. Unseen Forces and Dragon Frontiers added an Uncommon and a delta species card, and kawayoo illustrated all four of its HeartGold & SoulSilver era cards: a HeartGold SoulSilver Uncommon, two Gyarados Trainer Kit cards, and a Call of Legends Uncommon. The line continued through Phantom Forces, Shining Legends, and Dragon Majesty, and Fusion Strike added an Uncommon by Tomokazu Komiya before Temporal Forces printed a Common illustrated by Jerky, reaching the Mega Evolution era with an Uncommon in Ascended Heroes illustrated by Felicia Chen.
