Chespin evolves into Quilladin at level 16, which evolves into Chesnaught at level 36. A tough, green shell extends from its head to halfway down its tail, capable of protecting it from powerful attacks, with quills that are usually soft but can stiffen for attacking. Its name may mix chestnut, urchin (an old word for hedgehog) and pin. Chespin is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 313, a distinction Woobat also held prior to Generation VII. Chespin is based on a hedgehog and also appears to reference a chestnut shoot or bur, with the brown spot on the back of its head possibly alluding to Bend-Or spots found on chestnut-colored horses.
Clemont's Chespin first appeared in Mega-Mega Meowth Madness!, given to him by Professor Sycamore. A Chespin nicknamed Chespie appeared in Mega Evolution Special I under the ownership of Mairin, remaining outside its Poké Ball.
Chespin's first card came in the 2013 Kalos Starter Set, followed by a Common in the XY base set. It also has two XY Black Star Promos. A McDonald's Collection 2014 card and three separate BREAKthrough Commons followed, two by Megumi Mizutani and one by Kouki Saitou. A McDonald's Collection 2021 card by 5ban Graphics appeared in the Sword & Shield era. The Mega Evolution era brought an MEP Black Star Promo, and Chaos Rising added a Common and an Illustration Rare by Atsushi Furusawa.

The value behind Chespin cards sits almost entirely in the top ten, which hold 99 percent of the total. The most valuable Chespin card is the McDonald's Collection 2014 print, ahead of two XY Black Star Promos from 2013. Every one of the 12 Chespin cards carries a market value, and the cards span the years 2013 to 2026, so Chespin card value is set by a short list rather than spread across the species.
The McDonald's Collection 2014 Chespin leads Chespin card value by 1.4 times over the next card, an XY Black Star Promos entry from 2013. A second XY Black Star Promos Chespin from 2013 sits 3rd. The 4th card is the Chaos Rising illustration rare from 2026, a card type that features full-art style artwork in the Pokémon TCG. The MEP Black Star Promos Chespin from 2025 is 5th.
Of the twenty-five leading Chespin cards, 8 come from the XY era, 3 from Mega Evolution and 1 from Sword & Shield. The newest era's leader is the Chaos Rising Chespin from 2026, 4th overall. Every card in the top ten is modern, and so is every card in the top twenty-five, with none from the WOTC era that vintage refers to.
Among the ten leading Chespin cards, 4 are printed as Common, 3 as Promo and 1 as an Illustration rare. Widening to the twenty-five leaders, the counts are 5 Commons, 3 Promos and 1 Illustration rare. The most valuable Chespin cards are therefore mostly Commons and Promos, with the Chaos Rising illustration rare the lone card of its rarity.
Among species with priced cards, Chespin ranks 649th of 1020 by the value of its single leading card and 488th of 753 by the combined value of its ten leaders. In the evolution line, Chesnaught ranks 341st of 1020 by top card and Quilladin 982nd of 1020. The Chespin card market is built on a handful of leading prints, and Chesnaught's top card ranks above Chespin's own.
