Abra is a bipedal, yellow psychic Pokémon with a kite-shaped face, two brown pauldron-shaped shoulder extensions, and a thick, long tail, that senses danger through a telepathic radar and teleports to safety, sometimes even while sleeping through self-induced hypnosis. It evolves into Kadabra starting at level 16, and Kadabra evolves into Alakazam when traded, though in Pokémon Legends: Arceus a Linking Cord can substitute for a trade. In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta it was originally named Hocus, and of all Psychic-type Pokémon it has the lowest base Attack, tied with Smoochum for the lowest base Defense.
Abra carries a near-guaranteed flee rate in Pokémon GO, an homage to its habit in the core series of using Teleport to escape on turn one. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, a wild Abra Teleports away if approached from the front.
Its long sleeping hours and the rat-like tail of its earliest sprites suggest a Virginia opossum, an animal linked to trickery in American folklore, and its fox-like look may point to the brushtail possum. Its English name likely derives from abracadabra, an incantation used in stage magic.
Abra's earliest card was a 1999 Base Set Common illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, who also illustrated its later Base Set 2 and 151 printings. Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge both gave it Sabrina's Abra treatments illustrated by Ken Sugimori, and Paldean Fates added a Shiny Rare illustrated by Kouki Saitou. The Mega Evolution set added an Abra illustrated by Orca.
