Yanma is a Generation II bug/flying type whose 360 degree eyesight lets it track prey without turning its head, giving it a high evasiveness in battle. It is a skillful flier capable of sudden stops, midair turns, and hovering by flapping its wings at high speed, and it can generate shock waves capable of breaking glass or even launching a house skyward. Yanma shares the same base Speed stat with its evolved form, and it only evolves into Yanmega once it has learned the move Ancient Power, a nod to the prehistoric griffinflies of the genus Meganeura that likely inspired its design and that of its evolved form.
Jessie of Team Rocket caught a Yanma that a young trainer named Tyler had been trying to capture in The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, and Giovanni returned it to her after Team Rocket had already gathered a large number of Yanma; when Jessie used it in battle, it learned Ancient Power and evolved into a Yanmega. Yanma also appeared under trainer Zachary Evans in Wings n' Things, where its inability to control the sonic aspect of its wings kept breaking glass in town until Zachary reluctantly abandoned it, and under Forrester Franklin, whose Yanma teamed with an Ariados in a Double Battle against Ash's Pikachu and Treecko. A Yanma also competed in the Hearthome City Tag Battle Competition alongside a Bagon in Tag! We're It...!, though the pair lost to Brock's Sudowoodo and Holly's Wingull.
Yanma's earliest cards were the two Neo Discovery Rares illustrated by Atsuko Nishida in 2001, followed by a Skyridge Common from Miki Tanaka. Later eras kept it mostly at Common or Uncommon rarity, with Midori Harada and Shin Nagasawa each illustrating it twice. In the Scarlet & Violet era, Destined Rivals paired a regular Common with an Ayako Ozaki illustration rare.

The leaders among the most valuable Yanma cards come from across several eras, with the top spot held by the Reverse Holo from Supreme Victors (2009), a Diamond & Pearl set. All 21 Yanma cards carry a market value, spanning releases from 2001 to 2025, and the ten leading cards hold 99 percent of the total value. Yanma card value is therefore set almost entirely by a small group of prints, with the rest of the species adding very little.
The Supreme Victors Reverse Holo from 2009 leads Yanma card value by 2.8 times over the next card, the Neo Discovery Holo Rare from 2001. Third is the Team Rocket Returns Rare from 2004, an EX era card, followed by a Common from Skyridge in 2003. A reverse holo is a regular card printed with a holographic foil pattern across the card body apart from the art box, while a holo puts the foil in the art box itself. The Supreme Victors card is the only one in the leading cards listed as a Reverse Holo print.
The twenty-five leading Yanma cards spread widely: Sword & Shield contributes 4, while WOTC, Diamond & Pearl and Scarlet & Violet each contribute 3, and EX and XY add 2 apiece. Among the ten leaders, 7 are modern and 3 are vintage, and across the twenty-five it is 18 modern to 3 vintage, where vintage means the WOTC era and modern is every later era. The newest era's leader is the Destined Rivals Illustration rare from 2025, sitting 6th overall.
Among the ten leading Yanma cards, Common is the most frequent printed rarity with 3 cards, followed by Rare and Uncommon with 2 each. Holo Rare, Illustration rare and Rare (reverse holo) account for 1 card apiece. Reverse Holo is the only special print type among the ten. Widening to the twenty-five leaders, Commons number 13, with 2 Rare, 2 Uncommon, and single entries for Holo Rare, Illustration rare, Promo and Rare (reverse holo).
Among the 1020 species with priced cards, Yanma ranks 282nd by the value of its single leading card, and 281st of 753 by the combined value of its ten leaders. Its evolution line adds Yanmega, whose top card ranks 345th of 1020. Yanma sits in the middle of the field on both measures, and with 99 percent of its value in the ten leaders, the market for Yanma cards rests on a short list of prints.
