Weavile arrived in Generation 4 as the evolution Sneasel had lacked since Gold and Silver. Sneasel evolves into it by leveling up at night while holding a Razor Claw. It keeps Sneasel's Dark and Ice typing, with Pressure as its standard ability, which makes opponents spend extra PP on moves aimed at it, and Pickpocket as its hidden ability, which lets it steal the held item of a Pokémon that touches it.
Its Hisuian relative works differently: Hisuian Sneasel holding a Razor Claw evolves into Sneasler during the day, and Weavile is described as Sneasler's Sinnoh counterpart.
Paul caught his Weavile during his earlier travels through Hoenn, Johto or Kanto. It first appeared in Top-Down Training!, when Paul challenged Champion Cynthia and her Garchomp beat it despite Weavile's Ice type advantage. In Riding the Winds of Change! it battled a wild Gliscor alongside Paul's Electabuzz before Paul caught it, and in Pedal to the Mettle! it lost to Ash's Staraptor during their Full Battle, again despite having the type advantage.
Weavile's first English card was a Rare in Diamond & Pearl (2007), illustrated by Naoyo Kimura, with a second Rare by Kagemaru Himeno in Secret Wonders the same year. Platinum (2009) printed Weavile G, a holo from the subset of Pokémon owned by Team Galactic, illustrated by Makoto Imai. Through the Black & White, XY and Sun & Moon eras it was a regular Rare in sets such as Plasma Freeze and Ultra Prism.
Its modern special printings start in 2019. Unified Minds gave it Weavile GX, an Ultra Rare by aky CG Works, and Cosmic Eclipse added a Secret Rare Weavile illustrated by nagimiso. Paldean Fates (2024) printed a Shiny rare by Shin Nagasawa, and in the Mega Evolution era Ascended Heroes paired an Uncommon by aspara with an Illustration rare by Uninori.
