Tepig is a quadrupedal, orange, pig-like Pokémon with a red snout, thick yellow stripe, and a curly tail tipped with a ruddy red sphere. It can blow fire from its snout, though it spouts black smoke instead when ill, and its excellent sense of smell helps it locate food, particularly Berries it likes to roast before eating, sometimes burning them when overexcited. Along with fellow Unova starters Snivy and Oshawott, Tepig has the lowest experience yield of any Pokémon in Black and White, a base value of 28 meant to keep the player's starter from outleveling Cheren after the first two battles, though this was raised to 62 from Black 2 and White 2 onward.
Ash's Tepig appeared in The Battle Club and Tepig's Choice!, previously owned by an arrogant trainer named Shamus who released him after a loss to a Deerling, and Ash later gained his trust and caught him, with Tepig evolving into Pignite during a battle with Shamus in Evolution by Fire!. Professor Juniper's Tepig appeared in In the Shadow of Zekrom! as one of the starter options presented to Trip, who chose Snivy instead, and Nanette chose a Tepig as her own starter Pokémon in New Places... Familiar Faces!.
Tepig's card run began with two 2011 Black & White Commons illustrated by Kouki Saitou and 5ban Graphics, and Ken Sugimori drew its McDonald's Collection 2011 and 2021 cards. Its BW Black Star Promos include printings by Ken Sugimori and Shin Nagasawa, and White Flare later paired a Common with an Illustration Rare illustrated by Orca. In the Mega Evolution era it appears in Ascended Heroes, illustrated by Uninori.
