Starmie evolves from Staryu with a Water Stone, adding the Psychic type to Staryu's pure Water typing. Its regular abilities are Illuminate and Natural Cure, and its hidden ability, Analytic, powers up its move when it acts last in a turn. Pokémon Legends: Z-A gave it a Mega Evolution: holding a Starminite, it becomes Mega Starmie, which keeps the Water and Psychic typing and takes on a more humanlike, long-limbed shape.
In the games, Starmie is the one constant on Misty's teams: it has appeared on every team the Cerulean City Gym Leader has used to date, and it is her ace in Pokémon Red and Blue.
The anime used it more sparingly. Misty's Starmie fought in her Gym match against Ash in "The Water Flowers of Cerulean City", holding off Pidgeotto until Team Rocket broke up the battle and Ash left with the Cascade Badge anyway. After that, Misty mostly relied on Staryu for battles, and Starmie became her way of crossing water.
Starmie's first card is Base Set #64 from January 1999, a common illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi, whose art returned in Base Set 2 and the 2016 Evolutions set. Gym Heroes (2000) printed Misty's Starmie, drawn by Ken Sugimori, and Skyridge (2003) carried three Starmie cards, including a holo in its H subset. Delta Species (2005) added two different Starmie δ cards, part of the EX-era mechanic that gave Pokémon types they do not normally have.
The special mechanics followed: Starmie BREAK in Evolutions, Starmie GX in Hidden Fates (2019), and Starmie V in Astral Radiance (2022), including a Trainer Gallery version by Akira Komayama. Paldean Fates (2024) gave it a shiny card, Destined Rivals (2025) brought back Misty's Starmie, and Perfect Order (2026) printed Mega Starmie ex, whose special illustration rare is by takuyoa. Keiji Kinebuchi and 5ban Graphics have the most Starmie credits in our catalog (3 each).
Starmie is one of the Kanto Gym Leader Pokémon that the card game keeps returning to. Its two Misty's Starmie cards, 25 years apart, bookend a run that takes in δ, BREAK, GX, V and Mega ex cards along the way.

Misty's. Starmie has been on every team the Cerulean City Gym Leader uses in the games, though in the anime she battled with Staryu more often.
Yes. Mega Starmie was introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and keeps the Water and Psychic typing. On cards it appears as Mega Starmie ex.

Starmie cards span 1999 to 2026, and all 35 of them carry a market value. The most valuable Starmie card is the Holo Rare from Skyridge, printed in 2003, and the ten leading Starmie cards hold 97 percent of the total value. That leaves little of the species' market value outside a short list of prints drawn from the WOTC era, the EX era and several modern sets.
Starmie card value starts with the 2003 Skyridge Holo Rare, which sits 3.6 times ahead of the next card, the Pokémon Rumble Starmie from 2009. The 3rd card is Starmie V from the Astral Radiance Trainer Gallery in 2022, an Ultra Rare. The 4th is a Rare from Skyridge, and the 5th is the Starmie δ Holo Rare from Delta Species, printed in 2005. A holo is a card with a foil-patterned illustration area, and the Skyridge and Delta Species cards each carry that finish.
Of the twenty-five most valuable Starmie cards, seven come from the WOTC era, four from EX, and three each from Diamond & Pearl, Sword & Shield and Mega Evolution. The newest era's leader is Mega Starmie ex, a Special illustration rare from Perfect Order in 2026, which ranks 6th overall. Vintage, meaning the WOTC era, accounts for four of the top ten and seven of the top twenty-five. Modern cards hold six places in the top ten and eighteen in the top twenty-five.
Among the ten most valuable Starmie cards, three are printed Rare, two are Holo Rare, and one each is Shiny rare, Special illustration rare, Ultra Rare and Uncommon. Widening to the top twenty-five, Uncommon is the largest group at seven cards, followed by six Ultra Rare, four Rare, two Common, two Holo Rare, and one each of Double rare, Shiny rare and Special illustration rare. Starmie cards at the lower printed rarities appear throughout the leading group.
By the value of its single leading card, Starmie ranks 62nd of 1020 species with priced cards. By the combined value of its ten leaders it ranks 86th of 753. The one other member of its evolution line, Staryu, ranks 377th of 1020 by top card. Starmie's market is built on a short run of leading prints, while Staryu's top card sits far lower among the species.
