Spheal evolves into Sealeo starting at level 32, which evolves into Walrein at level 44. Its category comes from its habit of clapping its flippers when it is happy, which makes group meals noisy. Its round body is poorly suited to swimming, so it gets around by rolling over ice floes, and Sealeo is known to juggle it. Thick fur over a layer of blubber keeps it warm. Its design mixes an eared seal with a ball, and its name blends sphere and seal.
Spheal debuted in The Spheal of Approval, under the ownership of Marius, who used it to confront Ash and Max when he mistook them for thieves, and it battled Pikachu. In The Great Eight Fate!, a Spheal was part of Juan's Sootopolis City Water Exhibit and was captured by Team Rocket along with his other Pokémon before they all escaped together. In PK19, Pikachu and his friends rescued a Spheal stuck in the snow on an icy island, and it joined them. In Leading a Stray!, several Spheal helped Luxio free a Wailmer trapped in the sewers.
Spheal's earliest cards were two Team Aqua's Spheal Commons in Team Magma vs Team Aqua in 2004, illustrated by Nakaoka. Hidden Legends, Legend Maker, and Power Keepers continued the Common printings through the EX era, and the line ran through Mysterious Treasures, Rising Rivals, Dragons Exalted, and a pair of Primal Clash Commons, plus a Double Crisis Team Aqua's Spheal. Cosmic Eclipse and Chilling Reign continued the run, and Surging Sparks added a Common and an Illustration rare by miki kudo.

Spheal card value comes mostly from the EX era, which supplies 5 of the twenty-five leading cards, followed by XY with 4 and Diamond & Pearl, Sun & Moon and Scarlet & Violet with 2 each. The newest era's leader is the Surging Sparks Spheal from 2024, which ranks 1st overall. All ten leaders are modern cards, and so are 17 of the leading twenty-five, where modern means every era after the WOTC era.
The printed rarities among the ten most valuable Spheal cards are Common, which accounts for 9 of them, and Illustration rare, which accounts for 1. Widening to the leading twenty-five Spheal cards, the split is 16 Commons and 1 Illustration rare. Those two printed rarities make up every leading card in both groups. The Spheal card list at the top is a Common-rarity list with one Illustration rare above it.
