Ponyta is a first-generation Fire type, a meter tall and 30 kilograms, that evolves into Rapidash at level 40. Its standard abilities are Run Away, which guarantees an escape from wild battles, and Flash Fire, which absorbs an incoming Fire move and powers up its own; Flame Body is its hidden ability. In Red and Blue it is on the team of Blaine, the Cinnabar Island Gym Leader who specializes in Fire types, alongside Growlithe, Rapidash and Arcanine.
Sword and Shield added Galarian Ponyta, a Psychic type found wild in Pokémon Shield's Glimwood Tangle (Sword players need a trade or an event). It keeps Run Away, gains Pastel Veil in place of Flash Fire, has Anticipation as its hidden ability, and evolves at level 40 into Galarian Rapidash, a Psychic and Fairy type.
Ponyta debuted in The Flame Pokémon-athon!, where Ash rides Lara Laramie's Ponyta in the Big P Pokémon Race after her injury keeps her out; it evolves into Rapidash mid-race and wins. Galarian Ponyta arrived in Pokémon Journeys, when Chloe meets one in the Glimwood Tangle and helps it heal an injured Galarian Rapidash.
Ponyta's first English card is Base Set #60 from January 1999, a common illustrated by Ken Sugimori. Seven of its printings come from the Wizards of the Coast era, including Team Rocket and two Blaine's Ponyta commons, one in Gym Heroes and one in Gym Challenge, both also drawn by Sugimori.
Nearly all of Ponyta's cards are commons. The exceptions stand out: Arceus (2009) carries Ponyta SH11, one of three shiny Pokémon cards (with Bagon and Shinx) numbered past that set's main list, drawn by Kanako Eo with an attack called Blue Fire. Galarian Ponyta has a SWSH Black Star Promo and a shiny rare in the Shining Fates Shiny Vault, while the Kanto form keeps turning up as a common in Scarlet & Violet sets such as Destined Rivals.

Ponyta cards span 1999 to 2025, and every one of the 30 Ponyta cards carries a market value. The most valuable Ponyta card is the Reverse Holo from Arceus in 2009, which sits ahead of a Galarian Ponyta from Shining Fates Shiny Vault. The ten leading cards hold 98 percent of the total value, so Ponyta card value is concentrated almost entirely at the top of the ranking.
The Arceus Reverse Holo from 2009 leads Ponyta card value by 15.2 times over the next card, the Galarian Ponyta from Shining Fates Shiny Vault in 2021, a shiny rare. Third is another Galarian Ponyta, a promo from the SWSH Black Star Promos in 2019. Fourth is the Aquapolis Ponyta from 2003, a common, and fifth is the Expedition Base Set Ponyta from 2002, also a common. A reverse holo is a card whose holographic foil covers the body of the card rather than the artwork box.
Of the twenty-five most valuable Ponyta cards, 7 come from WOTC, 5 from Diamond & Pearl, 4 from XY and 3 from Sword & Shield. The newest era's leader is the 151 Ponyta from 2023, in Scarlet & Violet, which sits 23rd overall. In the top ten, 4 cards are vintage and 6 are modern, and in the top twenty-five the split is 7 vintage and 18 modern. Here vintage means the WOTC era, and modern is every later era.
Among the ten leading Ponyta cards, 6 are Commons, with one each of Promo, Rare (reverse holo), Shiny rare and Uncommon. The Reverse Holo from Arceus is the only card in the top ten with a listed print type. Widening to the twenty-five leaders, the picture holds: 21 are Commons, and the Promo, Rare (reverse holo), Shiny rare and Uncommon each appear once.
By the value of its single leading card, Ponyta ranks 115th of 1020 species with priced cards. By the combined value of its ten leaders it ranks 180th of 753. Rapidash, the one other member of the evolution line, ranks 192nd of 1020 by its top card. Ponyta cards therefore sit in the middle of the field on the strength of one leading card, with a large gap beneath it, and the Ponyta line does not have a deep bench of high-value cards behind it.
