Marshadow is a Mythical Fighting/Ghost type made of smoky gray shadows, with headgear-like features and a wispy horn. When angered or attacking, its fighting spirit begins to burn, transforming it into Zenith Marshadow, in which its headgear, wrist bumps, and collar flare up like green and yellow flames. Each arm has a small bump on the wrist, and a trail of shadows follows each foot.
Marshadow's normal and Shiny colorations are identical outside of its Zenith form, a trait Magearna shared in Generation VII. Its effort value yield of two Attack and one Speed is unique among Pokémon. It is based on the shadowboxing exercise and shares traits with Nightmarchers and Menehune from Hawaiian mythology. It went undiscovered for so long that very few people have ever laid eyes on it.
Marshadow was revealed through the I Choose You! movie trilogy, as were Zeraora and Zarude, each shown alongside a Johto Pokémon (Ho-Oh, Lugia and Celebi). All three share a Z theme, which for Marshadow is its Zenith form and exclusive Z-Move. Marshadow and Zenith Marshadow also appear in the I Choose You! manga. Marshadow's Japanese name and its romanization were revealed on April 10, 2016, as a result of its trademark filing.

The era that shapes Marshadow's most valuable cards is Sun & Moon, and the card at the top of the ranking is the Marshadow & Machamp GX Ultra Rare from Unbroken Bonds, 2019. All 17 Marshadow cards carry a market value, with releases spanning 2017 to 2026, and the ten leading cards hold 98 percent of the total value. The remaining cards share only a thin slice of the species' market.
Marshadow card value starts with the Unbroken Bonds Marshadow & Machamp GX from 2019, which sits 3.2 times ahead of the next card, a Secret Rare print of the same card from the same set. Two more Ultra Rare versions follow in ranks 3 and 4. The single-Pokémon Marshadow GX comes next as a Secret Rare from Burning Shadows, 2017, with an Ultra Rare version of it from the same set also in the ten leaders.
Sun & Moon supplies 13 of the 25 leading Marshadow cards, with 3 from Mega Evolution and 1 from Sword & Shield. The newest leader is the Marshadow Illustration rare from Mega Evolution, 2025, which places 7th overall. Vintage means the WOTC era and modern is every later era, so all 10 of the top ten and all 17 of the top twenty-five are modern cards.
Among the ten most valuable Marshadow cards, 5 are Ultra Rare, 2 are Secret Rare, and 1 each is an Illustration rare, a Promo and a Rare. Widening to the leading twenty-five brings in 3 Holo Rare cards, 2 more Promo cards and 2 Uncommon cards, while the Ultra Rare count stays at 5. Each of these is a rarity as printed on the card.
By the value of its single leading card, Marshadow ranks 122nd of 1020 species with priced cards. By the combined value of its ten leaders it ranks 148th of 753. Those placements put Marshadow in the middle of the species field, and its card market rests on a short list of Sun & Moon GX cards, led by the Unbroken Bonds Marshadow & Machamp GX.
