Manaphy is a Mythical Water type that hatches from a distinctive Egg matching its own coloring, and it is one of only two Mythical Pokémon, alongside Phione, able to produce Eggs through breeding, despite Manaphy itself being unobtainable that way. Its Egg sits in the Generation V game code even though Eggs cannot be moved with Poké Transfer, and it hatches with its own animation in Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Its English name was first found in the internal data of Pokémon Ranger on November 2, 2006.
In the film Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, a Manaphy Egg was sought by the Phantom and his gang before hatching in May's hands; it helped the People of the Water find the Sea Temple Samiya and is known as the Prince of the Sea. In Pikachu, What's This Key?, Meowth, Wobbuffet, and Inkay encounter a Manaphy in a floating water world before being launched skyward by a Wailord.
Manaphy is thought to be based on sea angels, tiny transparent ocean mollusks, with its Egg design echoing the jellyfish Turritopsis dohrnii. Its earliest card is the 2007 Diamond & Pearl Rare Holo illustrated by Nakaoka. The XY era brought two Black Star promos illustrated by Hitoshi Ariga and a Manaphy EX Ultra Rare pair from BREAKpoint illustrated by Ryo Ueda and Eske Yoshinob, and Crown Zenith's Galarian Gallery added a Rare illustrated by Taira Akitsu.

Manaphy cards in the top twenty-five come from seven eras, led by XY with 5, then Sword & Shield with 4 and Diamond & Pearl with 3, with EX and Sun & Moon at 2 each. The newest era's leader is the Holo Rare from Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery, 2023, 8th overall. Among the ten leading Manaphy cards the printed rarities are Holo Rare, Promo, Rare and Rare Holo at 2 cards each, plus 1 Ultra Rare. Widening to the leading twenty-five, Holo Rare is the most common rarity at 5 cards, followed by Rare at 4 and Promo at 3, with 2 each of Rare Holo and Ultra Rare and 1 Uncommon. The leading Manaphy cards are holo and promo prints alongside plain Rare printings.
By the value of its single leading card, Manaphy ranks 334th of 1020 species with priced cards, and by the combined value of its ten leaders it ranks 284th of 753. Phione, the only other member of the evolution line, ranks 638th of 1020 by its top card.
