Iron Moth looks like a robotic Volcarona, with red compound eyes, white armor over its thorax, and six diamond-shaped wings that hover just off its body and can form a sun-shaped cannon. An Occulture magazine article says its name comes from a flying object in the Violet Book that resembled Volcarona and would descend from the sky to follow people, sometimes attacking them. It has the highest base Special Attack of all Paradox Pokémon.
It is based on Volcarona, and its descriptions suggest a UFO, specifically a foo fighter, often described as a ball of fire. It may also reference satellites such as the James Webb Space Telescope, with its wings resembling solar panels, heat radiators, or LED displays.
Iron Moth debuted as a Rare in Paradox Rift illustrated by Kouki Saitou, alongside an Illustration Rare by Takeshi Nakamura in the same set. Shrouded Fable later added a further Uncommon printing illustrated by Shinji Kanda.
