Froakie evolves into Frogadier at level 16, and Frogadier becomes Greninja at level 36, gaining the Dark type alongside Water. Its standard ability, Torrent, boosts Water-type moves when its HP runs low, and its hidden ability, Protean, changes Greninja's own type to match whichever move it is about to use. Sun and Moon added Battle Bond, an ability only Greninja has: after it knocks out a foe, it becomes Ash-Greninja. Generation IX removed that form and reworked Battle Bond into a stat boost. Pokémon Legends: Z-A gave Greninja a Mega Evolution, Mega Greninja, which keeps the Water and Dark typing.
Greninja's defining anime moment came through Ash Ketchum's own Froakie, which evolved through Frogadier into a Greninja able to tap into the Bond Phenomenon, a rare state rooted in the trust between a Pokémon and its Trainer. As Ash-Greninja it changes appearance and gains a burst of speed and power, Ash and Greninja feel each other's pain and exhaustion, and in its final stage a huge water shuriken forms on its back. Battle Bond is the games' take on the idea.
Greninja debuted in the Kalos Starter Set (2013), and the XY base set (2014) followed with a holo by 5ban Graphics. BREAKpoint (2016) printed Greninja BREAK, the Ash-Greninja-EX promo tied the card game to Ash's anime partner, and Forbidden Light (2018) added Greninja-GX, including a rainbow secret rare at #133. Unbroken Bonds (2019) paired it with Zoroark in the tag team Greninja & Zoroark-GX. Astral Radiance (2022) then printed Radiant Greninja; that expansion introduced Radiant Pokémon, cards limited to one per deck with an exclusive foiling style.
Twilight Masquerade (2024) printed Greninja ex, topped by a special illustration rare by akagi. In the Mega Evolution era, Chaos Rising (2026) printed Mega Greninja ex four ways, including an Ultra Rare, a special illustration rare by Susumu Maeya and a Mega Hyper Rare by takuyoa.
Greninja's card history tracks its anime story closely, from the Ash-Greninja-EX promo through a Radiant printing to Mega Hyper Rare art, and it has had a chase-tier card in nearly every era since XY.

Ash-Greninja is the form Ash Ketchum's Greninja takes in the anime through the Bond Phenomenon, gaining speed and power while Trainer and Pokémon share each other's pain. In Sun and Moon, the Battle Bond ability let Greninja take the form in battle.
Yes. Battle Bond belongs only to Greninja. In Sun and Moon it turns Greninja into Ash-Greninja after it knocks out an opponent; in Generation IX it was reworked into a stat boost.
