Clefairy evolves from Cleffa once its friendship is high enough, and evolves into Clefable when exposed to a Moon Stone. Its standard abilities are Cute Charm and Magic Guard, which blocks most indirect damage, and its hidden ability is Friend Guard. It stands 0.6 meters tall and weighs 7.5 kilograms.
Clefairy's category has been "Fairy Pokémon" since the original games, but the Fairy type did not exist until Pokémon X and Y in 2013. For its first five generations Clefairy was a Normal type; Generation VI retyped it, along with Cleffa and Clefable, as Fairy. Goldenrod City Gym Leader Whitney uses one in Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, and Lillie battles with a Clefairy in the Episode RR story of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
Clefairy first appeared in "Clefairy and the Moon Stone," where some of a group of Clefairy evolved into Clefable after touching the Moon Stone, the same item that evolves them in the games. "Clefairy Tales" later cast a colony as extraterrestrials whose spacecraft had crash-landed near Viridian City and who resorted to stealing items. Whitney's Clefairy appeared in "A Goldenrod Opportunity" and took part in her Gym battle against Ash, until its Metronome failed against his Cyndaquil and she recalled it.
Clefairy's first English card is the Base Set holo, #5 in the 1999 set, illustrated by Ken Sugimori, who also drew its Base Set 2 reprint and the Gym Heroes Erika's Clefairy. Gym Challenge added a second Erika's Clefairy, by Atsuko Nishida, tying Clefairy to the Celadon City Gym Leader.
Its modern run centers on Lillie. Lillie's Clefairy ex appeared as a Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promo and then as special illustration rares in Journey Together (2025, illustrated by Susumu Maeya) and Ascended Heroes (2026, by Naoki Saito). Perfect Order (2026) added an illustration rare Clefairy by Cona Nitanda.
Clefairy has cards in every era from WOTC to Mega Evolution, so a single collection can run from a Base Set holo to a Lillie's Clefairy ex special illustration rare. The Lillie's Clefairy ex cards continue a line of Trainer-named Clefairy cards that began with the Gym-era Erika's Clefairy.
