Chimchar is the Chimp Pokémon, a pure Fire-type starter Pokémon from Generation 4 at dex #390. It evolves into Monferno at level 14 and into Infernape at level 36. The flames it produces by burning gas in its stomach cannot be doused by rain, though they go out while it sleeps and burn weakly when it feels ill; in the past, this rear flame led people to mistake it for an apparition dubbed the Lantern-Tail.
Paul's Chimchar first appeared in When Pokémon Worlds Collide!, and after Paul released it, Ash caught it in Smells Like Team Spirit, evolving it into Monferno in Evolving Strategies! and finally into Infernape in Fighting Ire with Fire!. Flint's Infernape was shown as a Chimchar in Flint Sparks the Fire!, and the species debuted proper in Following A Maiden's Voyage!, stealing food from Piplup and causing chaos in Professor Rowan's lab. Chimchar was also one of two main members of Team Poképals in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness and Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness.
Chimchar's first English card is a 2007 Diamond & Pearl Common illustrated by Ken Sugimori. Kagemaru Himeno drew a DP Black Star promo as well as the POP Series 6 and POP Series 8 cards. Later Commons came from Masakazu Fukuda in Supreme Victors, sui in Plasma Storm, Shibuzoh. in Steam Siege, and Ken Sugimori and Kouki Saitou in Ultra Prism, followed by Jerky's Twilight Masquerade card in the Scarlet & Violet era. Saboteri drew an MEP Black Star promo in the Mega Evolution era.

The value of Chimchar cards is spread very unevenly: the ten leading cards hold 97 percent of the total, and all 16 Chimchar cards carry a market value. The most valuable Chimchar card is the DP Black Star Promos Chimchar from 2007, and the priced cards cover the years 2007 to 2025. A short head of cards sets Chimchar card value for the whole species.
The DP Black Star Promos Chimchar from 2007 leads Chimchar card value by 4.7 times over the next card, the MEP Black Star Promos Chimchar from 2025, which carries the printed rarity Promo. Behind them come three POP Series entries from 2007, 2008 and 2009, in Series 6, 8 and 9, all printed as Common. The leader is a Common too, so the most valuable Chimchar cards are mostly Commons from promo and POP Series sets.
Of the twenty-five leading Chimchar cards, 6 come from Diamond & Pearl, 3 from EX, 2 from Sun & Moon, and 1 each from Black & White, XY, Sword & Shield, Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution. The newest era's leader is the MEP Black Star Promos Chimchar from 2025, which sits 2nd overall. Vintage here means the WOTC era and modern is every later era: all 10 of the top ten and all 16 of the twenty-five leading Chimchar cards are modern.
Among the ten leading Chimchar cards, 9 are printed as Common and 1 as Promo. Widening to the twenty-five leaders gives 15 Common and 1 Promo, so the Chimchar cards at the head of the market are overwhelmingly printed as Common, with a single Promo among them. These Commons come from sets such as DP Black Star Promos, POP Series 6, POP Series 8, POP Series 9, Majestic Dawn, Diamond & Pearl, Platinum and Supreme Victors.
Among the 1020 species with priced cards, Chimchar ranks 464th by the value of its single leading card and 457th of 753 by the combined value of its ten leaders. In the evolution line, Infernape ranks 95th by its top card and Monferno 983rd, so the line's strongest leading card belongs to the final form. Chimchar cards form a mid-table market, built on a short head of Commons and one Promo.
