Axew is a bipedal grayish-green Pokémon whose pale tusks regenerate and strengthen if broken. In ancient times people used its discarded tusks as cooking knives, and its tusks also serve for making territorial gashes and crushing berries.
Axew evolves into Fraxure at level 38, which then evolves into Haxorus at level 48. Its design was reverse-engineered from Haxorus, one of the earliest Unova Pokémon designed, and Axew holds the lowest base Special Attack stat of any Dragon type Pokémon.
Axew and its final form Haxorus appear to be based on dinosaurs, with its crest possibly drawing on hadrosaurid crests such as Saurolophus or a corytophanid like the brown basilisk, while its tusks seem modeled on axes.
Axew's first expansion card is the 2011 Noble Victories Common by Atsuko Nishida. The Black and White era also brought three BW Black Star Promos by Masakazu Fukuda and Akira Komayama.
The 2012 Dragon Vault set carried two Rare printings by Mizue and TOKIYA, and Kagemaru Himeno illustrated a pair of Commons in BREAKthrough. The 2025 Black Bolt set added a Common by Taiga Kasai and an Illustration rare by Ayako Ozaki.

Axew cards span 2011 to 2025, and the most valuable Axew card is a Common from the BW Black Star Promos set, released in 2011. All 15 Axew cards carry a market value, and the ten leading cards hold 99 percent of the total, so the value sits almost entirely in that group. The second and fourth places belong to other BW Black Star Promos Axew cards, with a 2025 Black Bolt card ranking third.
The leading Axew card from BW Black Star Promos, 2011, is ahead of the next card by 2.8 times. That runner-up is another Common from the same promo set and year. Third is the Illustration rare from Black Bolt, 2025, a full-art card type. Sixth and seventh are Holo Rare Axew cards from Dragon Vault, 2012, where the artwork area carries a holographic finish. Axew card value is led by promos first, then one modern illustration card.
Eight of the 25 leading Axew cards come from the Black & White era, three from Scarlet & Violet, two from XY, and one each from Sun & Moon and Sword & Shield. The newest era's leader is the Black Bolt Illustration rare from 2025, which ranks 3rd overall. Vintage means the WOTC era, and modern is every later era: all ten of the top ten and all 15 of the top 25 Axew cards are modern.
Among the ten most valuable Axew cards, six are Commons, two are Holo Rares and one is an Illustration rare. Widening to the leading 25, there are 11 Commons, two Holo Rares and the one Illustration rare. Common is the dominant printed rarity among the most valuable Axew cards, with the holo and illustration prints filling the remaining places.
By the value of its single leading card, Axew ranks 299th of 1020 species with priced cards, and by the combined value of its ten leaders it ranks 288th of 753. Within the evolution line, Haxorus ranks 324th of 1020 by top card and Fraxure 450th of 1020. The Axew card market is built on a few promo and set cards, and Axew sits above both of its evolutions.
