Professor Elm runs his lab in New Bark Town and gives the player Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile at the start of Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, then sends them to Mr. Pokémon's house to collect an Egg. He specializes in breeding and is credited with discovering Pokémon Eggs, and Professor Oak, whom Elm once assisted and still admires, calls him the best at researching evolution.
That Egg later comes back to the player through Elm's aide in Violet City and hatches into a Togepi. Elm lives near the lab with his wife and a son who wants to become a professor, and his wife says he gets so wrapped up in research that he forgets to eat.
Elm's first card was Professor Elm in Neo Genesis (2000), a Trainer that shuffles the hand into the deck and draws seven cards but ends Trainer play for the turn; it was reissued as a Best of Game promo. Professor Elm's Training Method was one of the first Supporters, in Expedition Base Set (2002), and was reprinted in Unseen Forces, Dragon Frontiers, HeartGold SoulSilver, the HeartGold SoulSilver Trainer Kit and Call of Legends, always with Ken Sugimori art. Lost Thunder (2018) introduced Professor Elm's Lecture by Hideki Ishikawa, as an Uncommon and an Ultra Rare.
