Piers is the seventh Gym Leader of the Galar Gym Challenge in Pokémon Sword and Shield. He specializes in Dark-type Pokémon and awards the Dark Badge; he and Marnie are the first Gym Leaders in the series to use the Dark type. His team is Scrafty, Malamar, Skuntank and Obstagoon, his signature Pokémon.
Spikemuth is the only Gym in Galar not built over a Power Spot, so nobody can Dynamax there. Chairman Rose once asked Piers to relocate the Gym to a distant Power Spot; he refused, and with few fans visiting, Spikemuth has slid into neglect that Piers blames on himself. He skips the Gym Challenge's opening ceremony and first appears once the player clears Spikemuth's challenge, which reveals that the Team Yell grunts dogging the player are Spikemuth Gym Trainers in disguise and that Piers is their leader.
He had already planned to stand down once the Champion Cup ended and pass the Gym to Marnie, his younger sister and one of the player's rivals, and after the Cup he does. When Marnie is knocked out of the Champion Cup, he redirects Team Yell to cheering for the player, and in the postgame he helps the player and Hop stop the Dynamax Pokémon unleashed by Sordward and Shielbert.
Piers appears in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, debuting in Battling Turned Up to Eleven! after Team Yell tricks Ash and Goh into going to Spikemuth so Ash will miss his World Coronation Series battle with Marnie. Piers gets Ash to Wyndon in time. He also appears in the web series Pokémon: Twilight Wings.
Piers's first English cards arrived in Darkness Ablaze (2020): a Supporter Uncommon illustrated by take and a full-art Ultra Rare by kirisAki. Champion's Path (2020) reprinted the Uncommon and added a Rainbow Rare, also by kirisAki, numbered 78, above the set's printed total of 73.
Shining Fates (2021) added a full-art Ultra Rare by Megumi Mizutani, and Astral Radiance's Trainer Gallery (2022) added a card by GOSSAN. All six are Sword & Shield era cards.
