Gladion grew up on Aether Paradise under a mother who controlled her children down to the clothes they wore. He left the Aether Foundation with one of its experimental Type: Null, meaning to stop Lusamine and to free the Pokémon from the helmet built to hold its power down. By the time the player meets him on Route 5 he is working as an enforcer for Team Skull, though the Grunts never treat him as one of their own.
He joins the player and Hau when they storm Aether Paradise, showing them the secret lab where Type: Null were created and battling alongside the player there. At Seafolk Village he apologizes to Lillie for leaving her alone with their mother, then leaves to train and trusts her and the player to rescue Lusamine. After the player becomes Champion he runs the Foundation as acting president in his mother's absence and hands the player a Type: Null of their own.
Gladion meets the player again at the newly finished Pokémon League on Mount Lanakila, after Lusamine has been stopped. By then he has earned a Z-Ring and freed Type: Null from its restraint, and it has evolved into Silvally. In that battle his Silvally holds the memory for whichever type beats the player's first partner, since a memory changes its type. Gladion is also the one who gave the Silvally species its name.
In Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, Gladion keeps his Type: Null out of sight, nicknaming it Silvally and keeping it indoors by day so no one sees the helmet it wears. He beats Ash's Dusk Form Lycanroc with it in A Masked Warning!, and it evolves into Silvally when it rescues Lillie from Faba. He reaches the final of the Manalo Conference, where Ash defeats him to win the tournament.
His first English cards appear in Crimson Invasion (November 3, 2017): an Uncommon Supporter (#95) illustrated by Ken Sugimori and an Ultra Rare full art version (#109) illustrated by TOKIYA. That Supporter lets a player take one of their face-down Prize cards, then shuffles Gladion back into the Prizes. His name returns nearly nine years later on Gladion's Final Battle in Pitch Black (July 17, 2026), printed as an Uncommon (#077) and an Ultra Rare (#108), both by akagi, plus a Special Illustration Rare (#118) with separate artwork by DOM. It can only be played as the last card in hand, and boosts attacks from Pokémon without a Rule Box for the turn.

Gladion is Lillie's older brother and Aether Foundation President Lusamine's son in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, a Team Skull enforcer who left home with an experimental Type: Null that later evolves into Silvally. His two Supporter cards, Gladion (2017) and Gladion's Final Battle (2026), are almost nine years apart.
