Voltorb is a pure Electric type from Pokémon Red and Blue, a red-and-white sphere that closely resembles a Poké Ball. Pokédex entries say it was first sighted at a company that makes Poké Balls, that the reason for the resemblance is a mystery, and that people who mistake it for one tend to get zapped. It evolves into Electrode at level 30, stands 0.5 meters tall and weighs 10.4 kilograms.
Its standard abilities are Soundproof and Static, and its hidden ability is Aftermath. Pokémon Legends: Arceus added Hisuian Voltorb, an Electric and Grass type that resembles the wooden, Apricorn-made Poké Balls of the Hisui era and evolves into Hisuian Electrode with a Leaf Stone.
Voltorb's first card is Base Set #67 (1999), a Common illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi. Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge each printed a Lt. Surge's Voltorb in 2000, drawn by Ken Sugimori and Atsuko Nishida, and Aquapolis (2003) printed it as both a Common and an Uncommon. Stormfront (2008) included a shiny Voltorb as SH3, part of the set's secret Shiny Pokémon subset.
Hisuian Voltorb reached cards in Astral Radiance (2022), and Crown Zenith's Galarian Gallery (2023) gave it a gallery card. Voltorb also has Shiny rare printings in Hidden Fates' Shiny Vault (2019) and Paldean Fates (2024), and Journey Together (2025) printed Iono's Voltorb. Ascended Heroes (2026) gave it its first ex card, a Double rare. Ken Sugimori has the most Voltorb credits in our catalog (6), ahead of Keiji Kinebuchi (5).
Common is Voltorb's rarity for 34 of its 41 printings, so the cards that stand out are the exceptions: the Gym-series Lt. Surge's Voltorb, the Stormfront shiny, the two Shiny rares, the Galarian Gallery Hisuian Voltorb and the Ascended Heroes ex.

The games never fully explain it. Pokédex entries say Voltorb was first sighted at a company that manufactures Poké Balls and call the connection a mystery.
Electric and Grass, unlike the standard Voltorb's pure Electric typing. It evolves into Hisuian Electrode with a Leaf Stone.
