Tyranitar is the last stage of a three-Pokémon line from Pokémon Gold and Silver. Larvitar evolves into Pupitar at level 30, and Pupitar becomes Tyranitar at level 55. Larvitar and Pupitar are Rock and Ground types; Tyranitar swaps Ground for Dark, and Mega Tyranitar, added in Pokémon X and Y, keeps that Rock and Dark typing. Tyranitar stands 2.0 meters tall and weighs 202.0 kilograms.
Its standard ability, Sand Stream, whips up a sandstorm as soon as it enters battle, and its hidden ability, Unnerve, stops opposing Pokémon from eating their held Berries.
Tyranitar's first card is Neo Discovery #12 (2001), a holo rare illustrated by Hironobu Yoshida. Neo Destiny added Dark Tyranitar and Shining Tyranitar in 2002. The Shining card, drawn by Ken Sugimori, is one of the set's secret Shining Pokémon, printed in Tyranitar's alternate shiny coloring as a Basic Pokémon; it belongs to the Neo era's Shining line, not the EX era's Gold Star cards. The EX era then printed Tyranitar ex in Unseen Forces and Tyranitar δ in Delta Species (both 2005), a Delta Species card that gives it a type it does not normally have, followed by Tyranitar ex δ in Dragon Frontiers (2006).
Unleashed (2010) printed a Tyranitar Pokémon Prime, the HeartGold & SoulSilver era's more powerful variant with holofoil borders and gold foil name text. Ancient Origins (2015) brought Tyranitar-EX and M Tyranitar-EX, Lost Thunder (2018) a Tyranitar-GX with a rainbow Secret Rare version, and Unified Minds (2019) the tag team Mega Sableye & Tyranitar-GX. Battle Styles (2021) added Tyranitar V, and in the Scarlet & Violet era Paldea Evolved (2023) printed an Illustration rare by Nurikabe while Obsidian Flames (2023) printed Tyranitar ex. Destined Rivals (2025) added Team Rocket's Tyranitar.
5ban Graphics holds the most Tyranitar credits in our catalog (11), ahead of Mitsuhiro Arita and Hironobu Yoshida with three each.
Tyranitar's printings trace much of the card game's history of special formats: Dark and Shining cards in the Neo era, ex and δ in the EX era, Prime, Mega EX, tag team GX, V and Tera ex. Our catalog places Tyranitar cards in eight eras, with Sun & Moon printing it most often (9 cards), just ahead of the Wizards of the Coast era (8). Rare is still its most common rarity, 20 of its 47 printings.
