Sandygast forms from sand soaked in grudges, such as those of Pokémon beaten in battle or the dead, and it drains life force through its mouth. Anyone who grabs its shovel or reaches into its mouth falls under its control, even though Alolans treat putting a hand in its mouth as a test of courage. Sandygast uses this control to make children pile more sand onto its body so it can grow bigger, and it evolves into Palossand at level 42.
Sandygast and its evolution merely fade onto the screen when sent out rather than dropping down like most Pokémon, a trait it shares with Diglett, Dugtrio, Wiglett, and Wugtrio. Sandygast and Palossand are also immune to the move Telekinesis, as are Diglett, Dugtrio, and Mega Gengar.
Two Sandygast debuted in A Shivering Shovel Search!, where one evolved into Palossand and the other was shown in a flashback possessing Kiawe. A Sandygast also appeared in Mounting an Electrifying Charge!, where it was used to create obstacles during a Charjabug race across desert terrain.
Sandygast's first card was a Common in Sun & Moon illustrated by Akira Komayama, followed by further Commons through Burning Shadows, Cosmic Eclipse, Rebel Clash, and Fusion Strike. Paldea Evolved added both a Common by Shin Nagasawa and an illustration rare by Teeziro, with later Commons continuing through Twilight Masquerade and Surging Sparks.

Sandygast cards span 2017 to 2024, and the most valuable Sandygast card is the Illustration rare from Paldea Evolved in 2023. All 10 Sandygast cards carry a market value, so the full set sits in the ranking. No share of total value held by the leaders is given for this species, but the gap at the top is wide enough to define Sandygast card value on its own.
The Paldea Evolved Illustration rare from 2023 leads Sandygast card value by 37.1 times over the next card. That runner-up is a Common from Rebel Clash in 2020, followed by Commons from Twilight Masquerade in 2024 and Cosmic Eclipse in 2019. An illustration rare is a card whose artwork extends across much of the frame, while a Common is the base rarity of a set, so the top slot belongs to a different kind of card than the three behind it.
Every one of the ten leading Sandygast cards is modern, with none from the WOTC era, which is what vintage means here. The same holds across the twenty-five leading cards: four come from Scarlet & Violet, three from Sun & Moon and three from Sword & Shield. The newest era's leader is the Paldea Evolved Illustration rare from 2023, which also sits 1st overall among the most valuable Sandygast cards.
Nine of the ten leading Sandygast cards are printed as Common, and the tenth is the Illustration rare. Widening to the leading twenty-five changes nothing, since the counts stay at nine Commons and one Illustration rare. No Holo Rare, Reverse Holo, 1st Edition or Shadowless print appears among the Sandygast leaders.
By the value of its single leading card, Sandygast ranks 695th of 1020 species with priced cards. By the combined value of its ten leaders it ranks 671st of 753. In its evolution line, Palossand ranks 916th of 1020 by its top card. Sandygast cards form a small market where one Illustration rare outweighs a field of Commons.
