Rayquaza is a Legendary Dragon and Flying type with no evolutionary line. It stands 7.0 meters tall and weighs 206.5 kilograms, and its ability, Air Lock, cancels the effects of weather in battle; no other Pokémon has it. It is the mascot of Pokémon Emerald and appears on the box art, and in that game's story it comes down to end the battle between Groudon and Kyogre after Team Aqua and Team Magma have awakened both.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire made Rayquaza the one Pokémon that Mega Evolves without a Mega Stone: it only needs to know Dragon Ascent, a move no other Pokémon can learn. In the games' lore, an ancient people credited it as the first Pokémon ever to Mega Evolve and built the Sky Pillar in its honor. A Devon Corporation scientist attributes its power to an internal organ that does the job of a Mega Stone, fed by the meteoroids it eats in the ozone layer.
Rayquaza tops fan polls. It drew the most votes of any pre-Generation V Pokémon in a Korean Pokémon Global Link promotion poll, and a Japanese 15th-anniversary poll of core-series game mascots named it the favorite. In The Pokémon Company's 2020 Pokémon of the Year poll it was the most popular Generation III Pokémon and the only Legendary in the overall top ten.
Rayquaza arrived on cards in the EX era as a Rayquaza ex, both as a Nintendo Black Star promo illustrated by Ryo Ueda and in the Dragon expansion (2003). Deoxys (2005) added another Rayquaza ex and a Gold Star Rayquaza ☆, and Dragon Frontiers (2006) printed a Delta Species Rayquaza ex δ. Our catalog lists 59 Rayquaza printings across 31 sets, concentrated in the Sword & Shield (15), XY (12) and EX (11) eras. 5ban Graphics is credited on 15 of them, followed by PLANETA Mochizuki (8) and Ryo Ueda (6).
Later eras kept the special treatments coming: a Rayquaza C LV.X in Supreme Victors (2009), a Rayquaza & Deoxys LEGEND in Undaunted (2010), a Secret Rare Rayquaza in Dragons Exalted (2012), Secret Rare M Rayquaza EX and Rayquaza GX cards in Ancient Origins (2015) and Celestial Storm (2018), a Shining Rayquaza in Shining Legends (2017) and an Amazing Rare in Vivid Voltage (2020). Evolving Skies (2021) printed two different Secret Rare Rayquaza VMAX cards, Celebrations' Classic Collection (2021) reprinted an M Rayquaza EX, and Silver Tempest's Trainer Gallery (2022) added a further Secret Rare VMAX. Its most recent card, in Ascended Heroes (2026), is a Rare.
As Emerald's mascot and a poll favorite, Rayquaza has received almost every premium format the card game has used: EX-era ex, a Gold Star, LV.X, LEGEND, Secret Rare EX and GX, Shining, Amazing Rare and two different Secret Rare VMAX printings in Evolving Skies alone.

Ranked by each card’s main print in near-mint raw condition. 1st Edition, Shadowless and other versions are priced on each card’s page. The table updates live.
Where the leaders come from sets the Rayquaza card value picture: all ten of the most valuable Rayquaza cards are modern, and the top spot belongs to the Secret Rare Rayquaza VMAX from Evolving Skies in 2021. Of 59 Rayquaza cards, 57 carry a market value, covering 2003 to 2026, and the ten leaders hold 55 percent of the total value.
The Rayquaza VMAX Secret Rare from Evolving Skies (2021) is about equal to the next card, the Secret Rare M Rayquaza EX from Ancient Origins (2015), so two prints share the top of the most valuable Rayquaza cards. Third is the Holo Rare Rayquaza ex from Deoxys (2005), and fourth is a Holo Rare Rayquaza from Call of Legends (2011). A holo is a card with a foil-treated artwork window, which is what the Holo Rare name refers to.
Rayquaza cards in the leading twenty-five come mostly from the EX era with 8, followed by Diamond & Pearl, HeartGold & SoulSilver and XY with 4 each. The newest era's leader is the Mega Evolution Rayquaza from Ascended Heroes (2026), 57th overall. Vintage here means the WOTC era, and modern is every later era: the top ten Rayquaza cards are 10 modern, and the top twenty-five are 25 modern.
Among the ten leading Rayquaza cards, 4 are Holo Rares, 2 are Commons, 2 are LEGEND cards and 2 are Secret Rares. Widening to the leading twenty-five, Holo Rare is still the largest group with 8, followed by 5 Ultra Rares and 3 Secret Rares. The rest are 2 Commons, 2 LEGEND cards, 2 Rares, 1 Promo, 1 Rare Holo and 1 Rare Holo LV.X.
Among species with priced cards, Rayquaza ranks 7th of 753 by the combined value of its ten leading cards, but only 31st of 1020 by the value of its single leading card. Put plainly, the Rayquaza card market is built on depth across many prints and several eras, not on one standout card that towers over the rest of the species.
