Rattata is a pure Normal type that evolves into Raticate at level 20. Its defining feature is its incisors, which never stop growing, so it gnaws on hard objects to keep them short enough to eat. Its standard abilities are Run Away, which guarantees escape from wild battles, and Guts, which raises its Attack while it has a status condition; its hidden ability, Hustle, boosts Attack at the cost of accuracy.
In Gold, Silver, Crystal and their remakes, Youngster Joey on Johto's Route 30 battles the player with a Rattata. In HeartGold and SoulSilver he raises only one Pokémon and insists over the Pokégear that his Rattata is in the "top percentage" of Rattata.
Pokémon Sun and Moon added Alolan Rattata, a Dark and Normal type. The species reached Alola on cargo ships and multiplied until Yungoos were brought in to control it; to avoid its new predators it moved into towns, became nocturnal and formed nests led by Alolan Raticate. Fittingly, it evolves into Alolan Raticate only when it reaches level 20 at night.
Rattata's first card is Base Set #61 from 1999, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, whose art also appears in Base Set 2 and Legendary Collection; his five Rattata credits, including Secret Wonders and Evolutions, are the most of any artist in our catalog. The Gym sets gave it two Lt. Surge's Rattata cards, in Gym Heroes by Ken Sugimori and in Gym Challenge by Atsuko Nishida, and Team Rocket Returns printed two Rattata in 2004.
Alolan Rattata appears in the Sun & Moon base set, Burning Shadows, Celestial Storm and Pokémon GO, and Destined Rivals added Team Rocket's Rattata in 2025. Every Rattata in our catalog is a Common except the Pokémon Rumble promo, which carries no rarity mark, so its appeal is continuity: it has a printing in all ten eras from WOTC to Mega Evolution.
