Pineco is a pure Bug type that evolves into Forretress at level 31. It builds its pine cone-like shell by gluing tree bark to its body with a hardening fluid, growing bigger and thicker as more bark accumulates, and older Pineco can grow quite large. Pineco could always learn Swift as an Egg Move, but oddly could not learn it via TM or Move Tutor until Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Pineco waits motionless on forest branches for flying insects to pass, and in Alola it favors Cutiefly. Shake its tree while it feeds and it drops and explodes, a habit that, with its shape, suggests a grenade; its design is likely based on a bagworm case.
Pineco's first card appeared in the 2001 Neo Discovery set as a Common illustrated by Tomokazu Komiya. Undaunted later gave it two separate Common printings by Kagemaru Himeno and Kyoko Umemoto. Paldean Fates added a Shiny Rare Pineco illustrated by Scav, and Destined Rivals continued its run with a Common by YASHIRO Nanaco.
