Palpitoad uses a long, sticky tongue to immobilize and capture prey, and the light turquoise bumps encircling its head can be vibrated to generate waves and earthquakes as well as sounds that weaken opponents; larger lumps allow a wider range of sounds. It shares its Vibration Pokémon category with Vibrava and its own evolved form Seismitoad.
Palpitoad appears to be based on a toad tadpole, its lumps combining real toads' parotoid glands with loudspeaker drivers, possibly tied to the croaking of male frogs. The common Surinam toad, an aquatic amphibian that carries its eggs in pockets on its back, may be another influence.
Palpitoad's first card was a 2011 Noble Victories Uncommon illustrated by sui, followed by Dark Explorers and Dragons Exalted Uncommons from Kouki Saitou and Miki Tanaka. Plasma Freeze, Legendary Treasures and a BREAKpoint Uncommon carried it forward, and Black Bolt paired a Common with an Illustration Rare by KEIICHIRO ITO in 2025.
