Omanyte is a small, extinct cephalopod mollusk resembling an ammonite or nautilus, with ten tentacles and a pale yellow, helix-spiraled shell that it withdraws into when threatened. Considered extinct, it can be revived from fossils excavated in areas that were once oceans, and it evolves into Omastar at level 40.
Omanyte is based on the ammonite, a prehistoric mollusk related to modern squid and octopus that lived between the Devonian and Cretaceous periods, and its Pokédex number may reference the golden spiral of the Fibonacci Sequence. In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Omanyte was originally known as Ess, derived from escargot, French for snail.
In Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon, Ash encountered multiple Omanyte along with other Generation I Fossil Pokémon after a dynamite blast woke them from their dormant state beneath Grampa Canyon, and they chased Ash and Team Rocket until an Aerodactyl arrived and scared them off. In Fossil Fools, multiple Omanyte living in the Ruins of Alph were moved to a museum. In Dealing With Defensive Types!, an Omanyte caught Team Rocket trying to steal food from the Canalave Gym kitchen and used Water Gun to send them blasting off.
Omanyte was introduced in Fossil, followed by Neo Discovery, a Neo Destiny Dark Omanyte, Legendary Collection, and Skyridge in the WOTC era.
The EX era carried Sandstorm, Legend Maker, a delta species card in Holon Phantoms, and Power Keepers, and the Diamond & Pearl era added Majestic Dawn and Arceus.
The XY and Sun & Moon eras each carried a single Uncommon in Fates Collide and Team Up, and the Scarlet & Violet era brought a 151 Uncommon and illustration rare pairing, the illustration rare by Yano Keiji.
