Mantine is a large, ray-like Pokémon with wide wing-like fins, black ring-shaped marks on its top side, and a pinkish gray, gilled underside, evolving from Mantyke only when leveled up while a Remoraid is also in the player's party. It swims in open seas, often racing in schools, and with enough speed can leap out of the water and fly 300 feet into the air, which led past observers to take it for a bird. Despite the Remoraid requirement for its evolution, Remoraid has not appeared in any of Mantine's official sprites since Generation 4, likely because the evolution does not use up the Remoraid.
A Remoraid is sometimes seen clinging under one of its fins, feeding on its leftovers.
A recurring Mantine featured across the Where Are You Going, Eevee? shorts, rescuing Eevee after it was knocked off a boat by a passing Wailord and later teaching it to Mantine Surf before parting ways in Alola. The same Mantine appeared in the main series in Alola, Alola!, where it helped Sandy and Lana with Mantine Surfing before being captured and later rescued from Team Rocket.
Mantine's earliest card was a 2000 Neo Genesis Common illustrated by Ken Sugimori, followed by a Neo Destiny printing illustrated by Yukiko Baba. Dragon Frontiers gave it a Delta Species treatment illustrated by Sumiyoshi Kizuki, who also illustrated its earlier Skyridge card, and its Mega Evolution era printing appears in that set's own base release, illustrated by Shimaris Yukichi.

Mantine is the Kite Pokémon, a water/flying type that evolves from Mantyke when leveled up alongside a Remoraid. With enough speed it can leap from the sea and fly high into the air, which once got it mistaken for a bird, and a recurring Mantine appears in the Where Are You Going, Eevee? shorts.
