Huntail evolves from Clamperl when traded while holding a Deep Sea Tooth, making it one of Clamperl's two final forms alongside Gorebyss. Its sturdy spine and large eyes let it withstand the pressure and darkness of the deep sea, and it lures prey by wagging a fish-shaped tail with glowing eye-spots. Despite being a pure Water type, it bears a Dark-type Poké Assist in the spinoff Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia.
Traditionally, a Huntail washing ashore is considered a sign of coming misfortune, an idea that may tie back to Japanese and Taiwanese beliefs about beached rare fish presaging earthquakes or tsunamis.
Huntail appears to be based on the gulper eel, viperfish, onejaw or moray eel, and also resembles the oarfish because of its orange crest and fins. Its tail bears a resemblance to Gorebyss's head, serving as a lure to catch prey.
Huntail's first card came in the EX era's Hidden Legends, illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno, followed by Legend Maker's Rare from Midori Harada. Diamond and Pearl's Great Encounters used a Ken Sugimori illustration, while the XY era's Primal Clash brought a Masakazu Fukuda print. Later sets added a Sun and Moon era Uncommon by Shigenori Negishi, a Sword and Shield era Rare by otumami in Fusion Strike, and an Uncommon by Scav in Destined Rivals.

Ranked by each card’s main print in near-mint raw condition. 1st Edition, Shadowless and other versions are priced on each card’s page. The table updates live.
The most valuable Huntail card is the Holo Rare from Primal Clash, released in 2015. Huntail has 7 cards in total, and all 7 carry a market value, with prints spanning 2004 to 2025. The Primal Clash holo and the Hidden Legends Rare from 2004 sit about equal at the top, so Huntail card value is not built on one runaway print.
The Primal Clash Holo Rare from 2015 leads the most valuable Huntail cards, and the next card is about equal to it. That runner-up is the Rare from Hidden Legends in 2004, followed by the Rare from Legend Maker in 2006. Fourth is the Uncommon from Great Encounters in 2008, and fifth is the Uncommon from Celestial Storm in 2018. A holo is a card with a foil-patterned artwork box, which sets the Primal Clash print apart from the plain Rare and Uncommon prints behind it.
The ranked Huntail cards come from six eras. The EX era places two, and Diamond & Pearl, XY, Sun & Moon, Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet each place one. The newest era's leader is the Uncommon from Destined Rivals in 2025, which sits 7th overall. Every one of the 7 leading Huntail cards is modern, meaning a later era than the WOTC era, in both the top ten and the top twenty-five.
Among the leading Huntail cards, the printed rarities are Rare on 3 cards, Uncommon on 3 cards and Holo Rare on 1 card. Widening to the top twenty-five changes nothing, since the same 7 cards appear there. The one holo is the Primal Clash print from 2015, and the other six are standard Rare and Uncommon prints.
By the value of its single leading card, Huntail ranks 981st of 1020 species with priced cards. Within its evolution line, Clamperl ranks 887th and Gorebyss 879th by the same measure, so Huntail's top card sits below both. For the Huntail card market, that means value spread across a modest group of Rare and Uncommon prints plus one Holo Rare, with the single leading card sitting low in the species ranking.
