Hoothoot is an owl-like Pokémon with black rings around its eyes resembling clock gears and hands, and it cries at the same time every day, tilting its head in the same rhythm. It typically stands on only one foot at a time, alternating too quickly to track with the naked eye. It evolves into Noctowl at level 20. Its plumage is mostly brown with a cream-colored belly.
Hoothoot was designed by Ken Sugimori, who cited a childhood pet bird that stood on one foot as inspiration, and its design combines a young horned owl, particularly the Eurasian eagle-owl, with a clock. Its unique fade-in animation is programmed into Pokémon Gold and Silver but goes unused.
Multiple Hoothoot made their animated series entrance in Illusion Confusion!, rented out by Hagatha and Nagatha to help Trainers including Gary Oak through a haunted forest. In Fighting Flyer with Fire, Falkner used a Hoothoot in his Gym battle against Ash, defeating Chikorita before losing to Pikachu; it reappeared in a flashback in Why? Wynaut!. In A Staravia is Born!, a Hoothoot teamed up with Ash's Starly to hypnotize Meowth into helping other Flying type Pokémon escape. In Pikachu and the Pokémon Music Squad, a Hoothoot was shown living in a forest.
Hoothoot was introduced in Neo Genesis, followed by a Skyridge common in the WOTC era, then Unseen Forces, Diamond & Pearl, and HeartGold SoulSilver commons plus an HGSS Black Star Promo.
The Black & White through Sun & Moon eras carried Plasma Freeze, BREAKthrough, Burning Shadows, and Unified Minds commons.
The Sword & Shield era added Sword & Shield, Astral Radiance, and an Astral Radiance Trainer Gallery rare, and the Scarlet & Violet era brought Temporal Forces, Stellar Crown, and Prismatic Evolutions commons.

The most valuable Hoothoot card is the Common from Skyridge, printed in 2003. All 16 Hoothoot cards carry a market value, and the ten leading cards hold 98 percent of the total, so nearly the whole of Hoothoot card value sits in that top group. The priced cards span 2000 to 2025, and the Skyridge Common heads the list of the most valuable Hoothoot cards.
The Skyridge Common from 2003 leads Hoothoot card value by 1.3 times over the next card, the Promo from the HGSS Black Star Promos set in 2010. Third is the Holo Rare from Astral Radiance Trainer Gallery, 2022, a holo being a card with a foil-treated picture area. Fourth is the Neo Genesis Common from 2000, followed by the HeartGold SoulSilver Common from 2010. The lead is a narrow one among the most valuable Hoothoot cards.
Of the twenty-five leading Hoothoot cards, Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet each hold 3, while WOTC, HeartGold & SoulSilver and Sun & Moon each hold 2. The newest era's leader is the Stellar Crown Common from 2024, 10th overall. In the top ten, 8 cards are modern and 2 are vintage, and in the top twenty-five the split is 14 modern to 2 vintage, where vintage means the WOTC era and modern is every later era.
Among the ten leading Hoothoot cards, 8 are Commons, 1 is a Holo Rare and 1 is a Promo. Widening to the twenty-five leaders, 14 are Commons, alongside the same single Holo Rare and single Promo. Common is the printed rarity behind most of the most valuable Hoothoot cards, and the Holo Rare and the Promo are the other two printed rarities among the Hoothoot cards in that group.
Hoothoot ranks 558th of 1020 species with priced cards by the value of its single leading card, and 460th of 753 by the combined value of its ten leaders. In its evolution line, Noctowl ranks 82nd of 1020 by top card, well ahead of Hoothoot.
